Open Letter to High School Seniors

The next few months are going to rush by and before you know it, you'll be walking across a stage wearing a cap and gown. You'll be celebrating the end of high school, and the beginning of something new and very different. You'll be told that the rest of your life begins on the day you graduate high school. This semester will be full of things that you shouldn't miss out on. You'll experience a lot of lasts. At this point, you've already attended your last first day of school, your last homecoming dance, and your last (high school) football game. You're now beginning your last semester. It won't be complete with out your last (high school) spring break, your last prom, and finally, your last day of school.

My biggest piece of advice to you is to make every moment count. You don't get to do this again.  I know it's been a stressful year. You've visited and applied to colleges, and maybe you're still waiting to hear back so you can make that momentous decision. While you're still in high school, go to all of the events! Don't miss out on something because you can't wait to get out of high school. It's such an important four years of your life, but it's only four years. Soon you'll be looking back on it and missing the simplicity.

Spend quality time with your friends and family. The group of friends you have now are probably not going to remain as close next year. Sure, you'll try to stay in touch and you'll catch up over Thanksgiving and Winter Break, but it's not the same. College will force you to make new friends, especially when your old ones are miles away. That's why it's so important to make lasting memories now. The same goes for family. Once you start your freshman year, you'll realize that you never fully appreciated a home cooked meal or a hug from your mom.

High school and college are two extremely different things. In less than a year, you'll have more freedom than you ever imagined. You'll also have to manage your time and keep up with your classes, which is not as easy as it was in high school. You'll meet incredible people and you'll learn so much about the world. Just don't spend your last semester in high school wishing it was already over.
